Turkey’s Cappadocia region is unique in the world for its nature and history. Travellers are immersed in human history and marvel at the Peribacaları geographic formations (fairy chimneys). Bearing the signs of ancient civilizations, these towers of rock give way to homes and churches thousands of years old. Many are still decorated with original frisks.

Balloon flights over the breathtaking Cappadocian lunar landscape are a popular tourist activity and the region is well known for its mouth-watering cuisine.

According to Strabon’s ancient ‘Geographika’ text, during the reign of the Roman Emperor, Augustus, Cappadocia was bounded by the southern Toros Mountains, Aksarya to the West, Malatya in the east and the Black Sea shores. Indeed, Cappadocia is where the early Christians fled persecution.

Today, the Cappadocia area encompasses the cities of Nevşehir, Aksaray, Niğde, Kayseri, and Kırşehir. Its natural rocky region includes Üçhisar, Göreme, Avanos, Ürgüp, Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı, Ihlara and environment.

Uniquely, traditional Cappadocia homes and dovecotes are carved into the local stone. Construction begins at the foot of a mountain using rocks or cut stones. The only local building material, soft natural rock is easily quarried. The Cappadocia region’s geographic structure allows for stone to be processed. But after contact with air it hardens and becomes a very strong construction material.

travel turkey tour cappadocia Due to the plentiful availability and easy processing of natural materials, Cappadocia is well known in Turkey and beyond for stone masonry and a unique architectural tradition. Whole villas are constructed from rock. No wooden materials are used at all, including for house doors. Arches and lintels decorate entry ways and are frequently personalised with stylised ivy or rosette motifs.

Cappadocian dovecotes are small structures built during the 18th century and 19th century. Some of these dovecotes are of great cultural significance, providing a picture of the community’s way of life. Surfaces of dovecotes are often decorated with rich inscriptions and adornments by regional artists.
